Metaphysical & Cavalier
Thomas May
Thomas May (1595–1650) was an English poet, dramatist and historian, educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and Gray's Inn. He wrote several plays and translated Virgil's Georgics, but he is remembered chiefly for his rhymed English version of Lucan's Pharsalia (1627) and for his own continuation of Lucan's story.
His Continuation of Lucan's Historicall Poem (1630), in seven books, carries the narrative to the death of Julius Caesar. In the 1640s he became the historian of the Long Parliament. This archive presents his Continuation here, and his Pharsalia under Lucan.
