George Meredith

1828–1909

George Meredith (1828–1909) was an English novelist and poet whose sonnet sequence Modern Love (1862) gave unusually candid, ironic voice to a marriage's collapse.

His nature poetry, especially The Lark Ascending, prizes close observation and intellectual vigour over conventional sentiment.
