Metrophanes of Smyrna
According to J. M. Neale, Metrophanes was Bishop of Smyrna toward the close of the ninth century and is principally famous for his Canons in honour of the Blessed Trinity, eight in number, one for each Tone, sung at Matins on Sundays. He was a vigorous supporter of S. Ignatius and a partisan of Rome in her contest with Photius, and Neale's heading gives about 910 as the year of his death.
Neale found it impossible to translate a whole Triadic Canon without wearying the reader, so this file gives his 1862 cento from the Canon for the Sunday of the Second Tone, 'O Unity of Threefold Light'. Neale remarks that his translations need not be carried beyond Metrophanes.
