Thomas Middleton

1580–1627

Thomas Middleton (baptised 1580, buried 1627) was one of the most versatile English dramatists of his day, writing city comedies, tragedies, masques and civic pageants, often in collaboration. A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, The Changeling (with William Rowley) and Women Beware Women are the plays most often revived, and A Game at Chess (1624) was a political sensation.

The lyrics here are those printed in A. H. Bullen's Lyrics from the Dramatists of the Elizabethan Age (1889), including songs from A Mad World, My Masters and The Widow. Songs Bullen lists under Middleton and Rowley jointly, or under Middleton with a query, say so in their notes.
