Mir

dates not given in the source

The contents of Hindustani Lyrics list a poet under the plain heading MIR, separate from MIR SOZ, MIR TAQI and MIR DARD; the book gives no biographical note for him and no dates. It is not certain which Mir is meant, so he is kept here as his own entry rather than being merged with Mir Taqi Mir or any other poet.

The one piece given here is drawn from Hindustani Lyrics (London: The Sufi Publishing Society, 1919), in the English verse of Inayat Khan and Jessie Duncan Westbrook. It is a free rendering, not a literal translation, and the original Urdu poem is untitled; it is named here by its first line.

  1. What kind of comforter art thou to me?
