Eduard Mörike

Eduard Mörike was a Protestant pastor and, in his writing life, a poet and novelist of the Swabian school. His lyric poems are among the best loved in German, and many were set to music.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
