Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

1689–1762

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689–1762) was an English aristocrat, letter-writer and poet, famous for her Turkish Embassy Letters and for introducing smallpox inoculation to England. Her town eclogues and verse epistles circulated in manuscript and print in her lifetime.

The 2 poems here are the pieces printed under her name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.
