James Montgomery

1771–1854

James Montgomery (1771–1854) was born in Irvine, Ayrshire, the son of a Moravian minister, and was educated at the Moravian school at Fulneck in Yorkshire. He settled in Sheffield, where he edited the Sheffield Iris newspaper, was twice imprisoned for political publications, and wrote on humanitarian causes including the abolition of the slave trade and the plight of child chimney sweeps.

He published long poems such as The Wanderer of Switzerland and The World before the Flood, but is remembered chiefly as one of the foremost English hymn writers; ‘Hail to the Lord’s Anointed’ and ‘Angels from the realms of glory’ remain widely sung. This selection is drawn from Sacred Poems and Hymns, for Public and Private Devotion (1854), with the author’s latest corrections.
