Charles Morris

1745–1838

Captain Charles Morris (1745–1838) was an English army officer and songwriter, long the laureate of the Beefsteak Club and a favourite of the Prince of Wales's circle. His convivial songs were gathered in Lyra Urbanica (1840).

The 2 poems here are the pieces printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.

  1. The Toper's Apology
  2. The Contrast
  3. A Reason Fair to Fill My Glass
