Caroline Norton

1808–1877

Caroline Norton (1808–1877) was a granddaughter of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, a poet and novelist of the 1830s and 1840s whose collections include The Sorrows of Rosalie (1829), The Undying One (1830) and The Dream and Other Poems (1840).

After a failed and bitter marriage she campaigned against the legal position of married women; her pamphlets helped bring about the Custody of Infants Act (1839) and the Matrimonial Causes Act (1857).
