Oppian

2nd–3rd century AD

Two Greek didactic poems come down under the name of Oppian: the Halieutica on fishing, which Mair's introduction attributes to Oppian of Cilicia and dates to the reign of Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus, to whom it is addressed, and the Cynegetica on hunting.

Mair's introduction treats the Cynegetica as the work of a later Syrian poet of Apamea writing under Caracalla, so that the two poems are by two authors who have traditionally both been called Oppian.

  1. Cynegetica — translated by A. W. Mair (1928)
  2. Halieutica — translated by A. W. Mair (1928)
