Gilbert Parker

1862–1932

Gilbert Parker (1862–1932) was born at Camden East, Ontario, and became a novelist, best known for his stories of Canada and the Pacific, before settling in England. He sat as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Gravesend from 1900 to 1918 and was made a baronet in 1915.

His two books of verse are here: A Lover’s Diary (1894), a sequence of sonnets, and Embers (1895), a miscellany of ballads, songs and lyrics of memory, the north and the East. Several of the Embers lyrics were later set to music, among others by Sir Edward Elgar. The texts are from the Project Gutenberg editions of the complete books, which carry the author’s later prefatory notes.
