Coventry Patmore

1823–1896

Coventry Patmore (1823–1896) was an English poet best known for The Angel in the House, a long narrative sequence idealizing married domestic love that became one of the era's most influential, and later most contested, poems.

A convert to Catholicism, his later odes turn toward mystical and religious themes.
