St. Peter Damian

1002 – 1072

J. M. Neale describes S. Peter Damiani as Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and the great coadjutor of S. Gregory VII in his reform of the Church. He gives his years as 1002 to 1072 and says he spent the last years of his life at his Abbey of S. Croce d'Avellano after resigning his Cardinalate.

Neale calls 'Gravi me terrore pulsas, vitae dies ultima' the Dies irae of individual life, and notes that 'Crux mundi benedictio' follows the Vexilla Regis and does not seem to have been used publicly by the Church. This file gives Neale's 1867 versions of both.

  1. O Cross, whereby the earth is blest
  2. O what terror in thy forethought
  3. Terror grim the soul oppresses
