John Philips

1676–1709

John Philips was an English poet born at Bampton in Oxfordshire and educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He is not to be confused with his contemporary Ambrose Philips or with Katherine Philips.

His best-known poem is The Splendid Shilling (1701), a burlesque of Milton's blank verse, which Gilfillan prints complete.
