Stephen Phillips

1868–1915

Stephen Phillips (1868–1915) was an English poet and verse dramatist. He won sudden fame with his Poems of 1897 and with the plays Paolo and Francesca (1899), Herod (1900) and Ulysses (1902), which revived blank-verse drama on the London stage.

His popularity faded within a few years, and he died in 1915. The two short lyrics here come from Untermeyer's Modern British Poetry (1920); the extract from Herod printed there is not included.
