Winthrop Mackworth Praed

1802–1839

Winthrop Mackworth Praed (1802–1839) was an English poet and Tory politician, educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He is remembered for light, polished society verse such as 'The Belle of the Ball' and 'The Vicar', in which a quick comic rhythm carries a gentle irony.

His poems were collected only after his death. The pieces here are the ones that James Parton chose for his anthology of English humorous verse.
