Antonín Jaroslav Puchmajer

1769–1820

Antonín Jaroslav Puchmajer (1769–1820) was a Czech priest, poet, philologist and editor, a leading figure of the Czech National Revival. Bowring spells his name Antonín Puchmayer and says he died at Prague, an ecclesiastic of Radnice.

Bowring credits the poetry collection he edited with reawakening interest in the Czech language and literature. From it he translates the ode to the Hussite commander Jan Žižka.
