Raimbaut de Vaqueiras

fl. 1180–1207

Raimbaut de Vaqueiras (Raembaut of Vaqueiras in Farnell) was the follower and friend of Boniface, Marquis of Montferrat. Farnell relates that in 1202 he made ready, unwillingly, to join his master on the crusade that ended with the conquest of Constantinople and Boniface's kingdom of Thessalonica.

The verse in this selection is Ida Farnell's English version in The Lives of the Troubadours (London: David Nutt, 1896), where it stands beside a prose Life of the poet; the prose Life is not reproduced here. The dates are those Farnell prints for the period in which the poet was active, and the Old Occitan original is not included.
