Richard Coeur-de-Lion
Richard I of England, king from 1189 to 1199, appears in Farnell's book among the troubadours as a maker of verse as well as a patron. Her chapter on him gives the lament he is said to have composed while a prisoner in Germany on his return from the Crusade, probably about 1193.
The verse is Ida Farnell's English version in The Lives of the Troubadours (London: David Nutt, 1896); the prose of her chapter is not reproduced here, and the Old Occitan original is not included.
