American
James Whitcomb Riley
James Whitcomb Riley (1849–1916) was born in Greenfield, Indiana, and became the best-loved poet of the American Midwest, known as the “Hoosier Poet.” He worked as a sign painter and travelling performer before newspaper verse in Indiana dialect brought him a wide following, and he spent most of his later life in Indianapolis.
His most popular poems, such as “Little Orphant Annie” and “The Raggedy Man,” are written in rural Indiana speech and draw on childhood, farm life and storytelling. Riley toured widely as a reader of his own work, and Riley Child-Rhymes (1905), illustrated by Will Vawter, gathered many of his best-known verses for children.
