Johann Rist

1607–1667

Johann Rist was born at Ottensen near Hamburg in 1607 and died at Wedel in 1667. A Lutheran pastor at Wedel from 1635, he was also a dramatist and a prolific poet; he was crowned imperial poet laureate in 1644 and ennobled in 1653, and he wrote hundreds of hymns.

The English versions here are Catherine Winkworth's in Lyra Germanica (1855).

  1. Awake, thou careless world, awake
  2. All ye Gentile lands awake
  3. Follow me, in me ye live
  4. Praise and thanks to Thee be sung
