Sir Richard Ros
Sir Richard Ros (c. 1429 to after 1482) was an English gentleman and poet, known as the translator of Alain Chartier's French poem La Belle Dame sans Mercy. Few details of his life are certain, and no portrait of him survives.
His English version, made about 1460 from Chartier's poem of 1424, keeps the original's eight-line stanzas and its debate between a courtly lover and a lady who refuses him. It was long printed among the works of Chaucer, as in Thynne's edition of 1532, until Skeat edited it separately in 1897.
