Ronald Ross

1857–1932

Sir Ronald Ross (1857–1932) was a British physician born in Almora, India. A surgeon in the Indian Medical Service, he showed that malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes, and received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1902. He later held a chair in tropical medicine at Liverpool and worked at the Ross Institute in London.

Alongside his scientific career he wrote poems, novels and plays. Edward Marsh included his lyric 'Hesperus', from Lyra Modulata, in the first Georgian Poetry volume (1911-1912), and it is the piece reproduced here.
