Friedrich Rückert

1788–1866

Friedrich Rückert was born at Schweinfurt and was both an orientalist and a poet. He made German versions of Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit poetry and wrote a large body of lyric verse of his own.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).

  1. The Ride round the Parapet
  2. The Dying Flower
  3. Nature More than Science
  4. And then no More
  5. The Cathedral of Cologne
