Sean Clarach Mac Donnell

1691–c. 1751

Sean Clarach Mac Donnell was born in Co. Cork in 1691 and is said by Sigerson, in Bards of the Gael and Gall (1907), to have died in 1751. He kept up the custom of holding sessions of bards, and was known for his learning in Irish, Latin and Greek.

Three of his songs are given here in Sigerson’s English versions: “Over the Hills and Far Away”, “Grainne Mael” and “The Dells of Orrerie”.

  1. Over the Hills and Far Away
  2. Grainne Mael
  3. The Dells of Orrerie
