American
Lydia Huntley Sigourney
Lydia Huntley Sigourney (1791-1865) was born in Norwich, Connecticut, and lived most of her life in Hartford. She was among the best-known American poets of her day, nicknamed the "Sweet Singer of Hartford", and published some fifty books of verse and prose as well as many contributions to periodicals.
The poems here are the "In Memoriam" section of The Man of Uz, and Other Poems (Hartford, 1862), a sequence of elegies on neighbours, clergymen, children and public figures of Hartford and beyond who died between 1859 and 1862, a form of memorial verse for which she was especially known.
