James Smith

1775–1839

James Smith (1775–1839) was a London solicitor and wit. With his brother Horace he wrote Rejected Addresses (1812), a book of parodies of the leading poets of the day, supposedly submitted for the opening of the rebuilt Drury Lane Theatre.

The poems here are the pieces that James Parton assigned to James Smith in his anthology The Humorous Poetry of the English Language.

  1. The Baby's Debut
  2. Play-House Musings
  3. The Theater
  4. The Upas in Marybone Lane
  5. Christmas Out of Town
