Walter Chalmers Smith

1824–1908

Walter Chalmers Smith (1824–1908) was a Scottish minister of the Free Church, hymn-writer and poet.

The poems here are taken from Alfred H. Miles (ed.), The Poets and the Poetry of the Century (London: Hutchinson, 1891–1897), vol. 10, from the Internet Archive scans of that edition. Spelling is that of the anthology; Miles's biographical essay and extracts from longer poems are omitted, and only poems that could be read cleanly from the scan are included.

  1. Lord, I would choose the better part
  2. One Thing I of the Lord Desire
  3. Be Still
  4. Glenaradale
  5. The Self-Exiled
