Arthur Penrhyn Stanley

1815–1881

Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (1815–1881), born at Alderley, Cheshire, was educated at Rugby and Oxford, where he was tutor and later Professor of Ecclesiastical History. He was Canon of Canterbury and of Christ Church, and in 1863 was appointed Dean of Westminster.

He is best known as a church historian and for his Life of Dr. Arnold; his hymns appear in the hymnals. The poem here is taken from Edmund Clarence Stedman’s A Victorian Anthology, 1837–1895 (1895).
