James Stephens

1882–1950

James Stephens (1882–1950) was an Irish poet and storyteller, born in Dublin, best known for the fantasy The Crock of Gold (1912). His poetry collections include Insurrections (1909) and The Hill of Vision (1912).

His verse mixes Irish humour, pity for the poor and a mystical sense of wonder. The poems here come from Untermeyer's Modern British Poetry (1920).
