Selîmî (Sultan Selim I)

d. 1520

Selim I wrote verse under the pen-name Selimi; he came to the throne in 1512 on the abdication of his father Bayezid II and in a reign of less than nine years doubled the extent of the Ottoman Empire.

The poems here are taken from E. J. W. Gibb's Ottoman Poems (1882), the first English verse translations of Ottoman poetry; dates and biographical details follow Gibb's Biographical Notices.
