Arthur Symons

1865–1945

Arthur Symons (1865–1945) was a Welsh-born poet and critic, a leading figure of the Decadent and Symbolist movements in Britain in the 1890s. His books of verse include Silhouettes (1892) and London Nights (1895).

His critical study The Symbolist Movement in Literature (1899) introduced French poets such as Verlaine and Mallarmé to English readers. The poems here come from Untermeyer's Modern British Poetry (1920).
