Theodore of the Studium
J. M. Neale writes that Theodore of the Studium, by his sufferings and his influence, did more for the cause of Icons than perhaps any other man. He was Hegumen of the great abbey of the Studium, was imprisoned for his firmness in the dispute over Constantine's marriage, and under Leo the Armenian was exiled, imprisoned and scourged. According to Neale he died in banishment on 11 November 826.
Neale judges his hymns superior to those of S. Theophanes and nearly equal to the works of S. Cosmas, and praises the fervent penitence and love they show. This file gives Neale's two 1862 pieces: the Canon for Apocreos (the Sunday of the Last Judgment), of which he translated Odes I, III, IV and IX, and the Orthodoxy Sunday hymn, which Neale thinks may have been written by Naucratius, Theodore's favourite disciple.
