Henry Timrod

1828–1867

Henry Timrod (1828–1867) was an American poet, born at Charleston, South Carolina, and often called the poet laureate of the Confederacy. He worked as a tutor and journalist, and wrote several of the best-known poems of the Southern cause during the Civil War.

He died of tuberculosis at Columbia, South Carolina, in 1867, in poverty. “Katie” and “Carolina” are among his best-known poems.
