Ulrich von Lichtenstein

c. 1200 – 1275

Ulrich von Lichtenstein, a Styrian knight, wrote the autobiographical Frauendienst (1255), in which he tells of his service to a lady in tournaments and in song.

Three of his songs appear here in Frank C. Nicholson’s translation, Old German Love Songs (1907), made from the minnesingers of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries.

  1. As a Dream doth Flatter
  2. Love and Laughter
  3. The Praise of Love
