Samuel Ward

Samuel Ward (1814–1884), known as “Uncle Sam” Ward, was an American banker, lobbyist and man of letters, brother of Julia Ward Howe. He published a volume of verse, Lyrical Recreations (1865).

The poem here is taken from Edmund Clarence Stedman’s An American Anthology, 1787–1900 (Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1900).
