Isaac Watts
Isaac Watts (1674–1748), born in Southampton, was an English Congregationalist minister, theologian and hymn-writer, often called the father of English hymnody. The son of a Nonconformist who was imprisoned for his beliefs, he was educated at the Dissenting academy in Stoke Newington and from 1702 served as pastor of the Independent congregation at Mark Lane, London. Poor health limited his preaching, and from 1712 he lived under the protection of the Abney family at Theobalds and Stoke Newington.
His Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1707–09) broke with the English habit of singing only metrical psalms, and The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament (1719) recast the Psalter for Christian worship; it gave English-speaking churches such hymns as “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” and “Joy to the World.” His Divine Songs Attempted in Easy Language for the Use of Children (1715) became one of the most widely read children’s books of the eighteenth century, and a famous parody of its “How doth the little busy bee” appears in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
