William Charles Wentworth

1790–1872

William Charles Wentworth (1790–1872) was an Australian explorer, barrister, newspaper proprietor and statesman, one of the three who first crossed the Blue Mountains in 1813.

While a student at Cambridge he wrote the poem Australasia (1823) for the Chancellor's medal, where it came second to Winthrop Mackworth Praed's entry; Stevens's anthology prints its opening lines.
