Nathaniel Whiting

fl. 1637

Nathaniel Whiting was a Cambridge-educated poet and later a Puritan minister. He took his B.A. at Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1631 and his M.A. in 1635, and in 1637 published, under the initials N. W., the long verse romance Le Hore di Recreatione, or The Pleasant History of Albino and Bellama. He later became minister of Aldwincle in Northamptonshire and was deprived of the living at the Restoration.

Albino and Bellama, printed with the dream-poem Il Insonio Insonnadado that defends poetry against its critics, is written in an odd, inventive diction. The text here follows George Saintsbury's Minor Poets of the Caroline Period, vol. III (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1921).

  1. To the Right Honourable John, Lord Lovelace
  2. To the Reader
  3. To the Right Virtuous and Equally Beautiful Sra Inconstanza Bellarizza
  4. The Author's Apology
  5. The Author to his Book
  6. The Pleasing History of Albino and Bellama
  7. To Those Worthy Heroes of Our Age
  8. Il Insonio Insonnadado
