John Greenleaf Whittier

1807–1892

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892) was an American Quaker poet and dedicated abolitionist from Massachusetts, who used verse throughout his life to campaign against slavery and to record New England legend and rural memory.

His long autobiographical poem ‘Snow-Bound’ (1866), recalling his family snowed in at their farmhouse, became one of the most beloved American poems of the 19th century.
