William Inglis

d. 1778

William Inglis (often wrongly given as English) was born at Newcastle in Co. Limerick, taught classics for a time, and wrote some well-known Irish songs. Sigerson, in Bards of the Gael and Gall (1907), says he gave up song-writing on becoming an Augustinian friar, and that he died in 1778 in Cork.

His song “The Flower of Love” is given here in Sigerson’s English version.
