Ziyâ Beg (Ziya Pasha)

d. c. 1879

Ziya Beg, the son of an Albanian father, was one of the most distinguished men of letters of modern Turkey, a member of the Young Turkey party who withdrew to London after losing the favour of Sultan 'Abdu-'l-'Aziz, whose secretary he was.

The poems here are taken from E. J. W. Gibb's Ottoman Poems (1882), the first English verse translations of Ottoman poetry; dates and biographical details follow Gibb's Biographical Notices.

  2. Heart! Heart! How Long Shall Last This Sorrow
