The Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra

by William Shakespeare

Mark Antony, one of the three rulers of Rome, lingers in Alexandria in the arms of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, until news of his wife's death and of Pompey's rising calls him home. He marries Caesar's sister Octavia to mend the peace, but soon returns to Cleopatra and is destroyed by Octavius Caesar's forces at Actium. Believing Cleopatra dead, Antony falls on his sword; she, refusing to be led in triumph through Rome, takes her own life with an asp.
