The Acharnians

A comedy first produced at Athens in 425 BC

by Aristophanes

Translated by Benjamin Bickley Rogers (1924)

When the Assembly will not make peace, the countryman Dicaeopolis makes a private treaty with Sparta, wins round the furious old men of Acharnae with a speech made in a beggar's rags borrowed from Euripides, and opens a market of his own, while the general Lamachus marches off to war and comes home wounded as Dicaeopolis sits down to feast.
