The Anturs of Arther at the Tarnewathelan

The Awntyrs off Arthure at the Terne Wathelyn

by Anonymous (Middle English)

While Arthur hunts near Tarn Wadling, the ghost of Queen Guinevere's mother rises from torment to warn her of the fate that awaits the proud and the worldly, and of the fall of Arthur's realm; the court then rides to Carlisle, where the Scottish knight Sir Galeron claims Gawain's lands and the two meet in single combat. A north-of-England alliterative romance in fifty-five thirteen-line stanzas.
