Beware of Smooth Water
Translated by Edward FitzGerald (1853)
A light comedy of courtship in a Spanish household, where Don Alonso's daughters Clara and Eugenia, a nephew, gallants and servants cross one another's purposes. FitzGerald thinks it written for the 1649 wedding of Philip IV, and it closes on its own moral: beware of all smooth waters.
