The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark

by William Shakespeare

Prince Hamlet, summoned home to Elsinore by his father's death, is told by the Ghost that Claudius, now king and married to Hamlet's mother, murdered him. Feigning madness and staging a play to catch the king's conscience, Hamlet delays his revenge while the court around him unravels: Polonius is killed, Ophelia is driven to drowning, and Laertes returns for vengeance. The final duel leaves almost the whole court dead and the throne to Fortinbras of Norway.
