The Second Part of King Henry the Fourth

by William Shakespeare

The Archbishop of York and his allies rise in a second rebellion, and Prince John of Lancaster crushes it at Gaultree Forest by a false promise of peace and a prompt arrest. Falstaff, sent recruiting into Gloucestershire, trades old memories with Justice Shallow and takes bribes from the men he chooses to spare. Meanwhile the dying king, troubled by a crown that has cost him sleep, makes his peace with Prince Hal, who on his accession rejects Falstaff in the street.
