The Tragedy of King Lear

by William Shakespeare

King Lear, old and weary of rule, divides his kingdom among his daughters according to their professions of love, banishing the plain-spoken Cordelia and Kent. Goneril and Regan soon strip him of his retinue and turn him out into the storm, where he goes mad upon the heath beside his Fool and the disguised Edgar. Meanwhile Gloucester, deceived by his bastard son Edmund, is blinded for helping the king. Cordelia returns with a French army, but Lear and she are defeated, and the play ends in the deaths of Cordelia, Lear and almost all the rest.
